Diabetes and life insurance
Summary: At Beagle Street, we won’t automatically turn down your life insurance application simply because of a diabetes diagnosis. However, we need to know the type and severity of your condition before we decide if we can cover you. If we can, your diagnosis may impact the premiums and the amount of cover we are able to offer.

How does diabetes impact my life insurance policy?
Having diabetes may impact your life insurance premiums and how much cover we’re able to offer you. On its own, a diabetes diagnosis isn’t usually a reason for us to refuse an application, but this depends on the type of diabetes you have and the impact it has on your wellbeing.
When we assess your life insurance application, we look at the type and severity of diabetes you have. We also consider other lifestyle factors, such as your BMI and your smoking status, to give you a quote that’s personalised to you.
We’ll also ask you about any complications caused by diabetes, such as problems with your eye sight, and what medications you’re taking.
Please also be prepared to provide a HbA1c reading from within the last 12 months.
If you have diabetes, or any other medical condition, and you want to know if we can provide cover for you, we’d be happy to speak to you about it before you apply. Call us free on 0800 048 0480*.
Is diabetes a covered critical illness?
At Beagle Street, diabetes currently isn’t one of the critical illnesses we cover. You can see the full list of conditions we do cover in our policy terms and conditions.
What happens if I get diagnosed with diabetes during my policy term?
As we offer fixed premiums, we guarantee that your premiums won’t change during your policy term, unless you request any changes.
That means if you’re diagnosed with diabetes after your policy has started, your premiums and sum assured (the amount we’ll pay out if you die) won’t change.
However, you may decide you want to apply for more cover after a diagnosis. In this case, you may have to pay higher premiums. You can give us a ring on 0800 247 247* to discuss this.
