Life insurance for nurses
Nursing is an extremely difficult and challenging job, but it is also hugely rewarding for those in the profession. If you’re a nurse, you will have likely faced huge challenges in the last few years which might have made you think about life insurance.
And if you have family, people that depend on you, a mortgage and other big financial commitments, life insurance is certainly something you should be considering.
Does life insurance cover nurses?
Nursing isn’t considered a high-risk occupation when it comes to applying for life insurance. This means that you should be able to secure life insurance at the usual rates. When you apply for life insurance with us at Beagle Street, you will need to disclose your profession but it shouldn’t affect your application.
What life insurance is best for nurses?
As an NHS nurse, you are entitled to contribute to the NHS pension scheme which provides a death in service benefit if you were to die at work, as well as a pension. Many nurses also consider life insurance too, which will give their family added financial protection.
The right type of life insurance depends on you and what you want to protect, rather than the fact you’re a nurse. If you have a mortgage, you may want life insurance in place so your family can keep their home if you die. This would be in the form of decreasing cover that decreases in line with your mortgage – the more mortgage payments you make, the lower the level of cover. Or you may want to leave a cash lump sum to your children so they are covered financially. This is called level cover, as the payout remains the same throughout the duration of the policy.
How much does life insurance for nurses cost?
When you apply for life insurance as a nurse, the cost will depend on a number of factors. The type of cover and the length of term will be key considerations. We will also look at your age, health and wellbeing. When you apply for life insurance with us you will need to be open and honest about your situation and health.
You will need to tell us:
- Your age – the older you are, the higher your premiums are likely to be as you are more likely to get a serious medical condition that could impact your health.
- The type of cover – level cover is often more expensive than decreasing cover.
- The length of cover – you can decide to cover just the length of your mortgage or wait until your children are a certain age.
- Your health status – being a smoker or heavy drinker can affect the cost of your life insurance.
- Any pre-existing medical conditions – these include heart attacks or diabetes for example.
You must also be a UK resident aged over 18 to apply for life insurance at Beagle Street.
Do I need specialist life insurance for nurses?
No, you don’t need specialist life insurance for nurses and it isn’t a product we provide at Beagle Street. Instead, we will evaluate your personal circumstances and your reasons for taking out life insurance. We can then find the right tailored product for you.
Will critical illness payout and cover nurses?
Critical illness cover can protect you and your family financially by paying out a lump sum if you become unwell with a serious illness that means you can’t work. These can include cancer, MS, heart attack or musculoskeletal issues. It gives you and your family financial protection.
There is no reason why being a nurse would affect your ability to get critical illness cover.
