The importance of life insurance for couples
When choosing life insurance, it is important to consider the reasons behind your application. You may feel responsible towards your partner and want to consider the following:
- Life insurance provides financial security for your loved ones by paying a lump sum when you die. This sum could allow your partner to maintain their standard of living, meet their mortgage payments, cover funeral expenses, and support them while they are grieving. It is important for you to consider the amount of cover you might need to account for these costs.
- Life insurance can help cover your unpaid debts. If you were to pass away, the money from the insurance claim could be used to pay off your debts. This would relieve your partner from the stress of inheriting your loans.
- If you are parents, or have other caring responsibilities, life insurance can help to fund the care of your dependant, even if both of you were no longer around. This can be particularly important to support those who would inherit your caring responsibilities in your absence.
- If you are concerned about organising your affairs, Beagle Street offer a free simple Will service to all our customers. A simple Will is a Will that leaves your estate to a maximum of six beneficiaries without the use of trusts or tax planning. Without a will in place, it’s not always clear who you wanted to leave your estate to so it’s important to have one.
Single vs joint life insurance
A single life insurance policy only covers the policy holder and will therefore only pay out if they die, whereas joint life insurance covers a second person under the same policy.
With a single life insurance policy, if one of the policy holders were to pass away, then the remaining partner would still have cover under their own policy. With a joint policy, once this has paid out then the remaining partner would have to take out a new policy to cover them.
Joint life insurance covers two people under one policy which means you would only pay one monthly premium and only fill out one application. Joint policies are typically cheaper than two separate policies and they are suitable for several circumstances such as a mortgage, shared debt, or responsibility.
Critical illness cover
In addition to protecting your partner in the event of your passing, it is also worth considering adding critical illness cover to your policy to support both you and your partner in the event that you should become unwell with a range of serious conditions such as cancer, heart attack, stroke, or any of the conditions listed in our Policy Terms and Conditions.
The bills don’t stop if you were ever to fall critically ill and it is not always possible to continue working whilst recovering from a critical illness such as cancer.
The lump sum paid out on critical illness cover could help relieve some of the financial stress and give you and your partner financial peace of mind whilst you focus on your recovery. The same would apply if your partner fell ill and you included critical injury on a joint policy or if your partner included critical injury on their single policy.
Life insurance in a couple shows commitment and care by promising protection for your partner, even if you’re not around anymore. It’s not just a financial product, it’s a way to look after each other. Whether you already have a family together, own a home, have a joint business, or are just taking your first steps towards a life together, life insurance allows you to move forward with the peace of mind that the person you care about is looked after and your future is secured.
